I’ve been wanting to get a new camera for my hatcam footage and have been trying out many different types of cameras. I started with a Contour, then Contour+, dabbled with the Mobius and settled with the Polaroid Cube which is a fantastic and convenient camera. It doesn’t have the best video/audio quality but it’s certainly easy to use.
Then recently GoPro announced a brand new camera called the GoPro Hero 4 Session. Same form factor as the cube BUT with much higher quality video and audio. That got me stoked and I quickly bought one when it was available.
In this video, I’ll give you my unfiltered first impressions of the Hero4 Session camera with a specific use case in mind, which is for shooting. I will be uploading more videos of me using it for a match and figuring out the best way to mount it.
Final match of the season for Marysville as they shut down for the winter. Had a great time with a bunch of funnies in the squad. Weather was great albeit cold as heck. I think I shoot better in the cold. Came in 2nd behind NickH of course.
Also tried out the new Polaroid Cube camera instead of my usual Contour+ camera. It’s a very small and pretty handy camera. It’s not big and nerdy like the GoPro, yet still retains usable video quality. Audio sucks though, I prefer the Contour+ for that. All in all, for $100, I can’t complain.
The magnet makes it very useful and easy to mount. I’ll be switching to this camera for now till I find issues with it.
A friend and GM told me just before the match started to shoot all Alphas. It’s fun to hose but it’s more fun to win. I think he’s right! I didn’t get all Alphas but did get 93% of all scores. Also, our usual top shooters weren’t around so I took the match. *lol*
I get a lot of emails, and comments about what camera I use, how I mount them and what software I use to edit the videos I put together the past two years. Someone suggested that I record a tutorial video and post it up on YouTube. so here it is!

Shot at Renton’s first USPSA Match of the season organized by Aristotle. It was a super-cold day with temperatures around 30-34degF (felt like 25!) and light rain throughout the entire day. Stages were pretty fun especially the first hoser stage and the Paper Poppers classifier stage. Here’s the video I took :
I also took videos of 3 other shooters, ScottP who’s a GM, Caleb from Gunnuts, and my good friend Victor. I put them all next to each other and you can see how well we compared to each other.
All that reloading takes a toll on your hands. Checkout the wound from repeatedly hammering the ejection rod during reload :
Look forward to shooting more USPSA to get more practice!
I saw this on ebay.com for a relatively cheap price and thought I’d modify it a little move the camera from the center of the glass to the proper position on top of my right eye (since I’m right eye dominant).
here’s how it looks after I butchered it 🙂
Pretty cool angle huh?
