Here’s a short video review of my new Kimber CDP Elite II Ultra carry gun. This is a fantastic, small and very reliable carry gun that’s chambered in 45 ACP. Takes 7 rounds in the magazine that fits into it’s small Officer sized aluminum frame.
It shoots well, is very reliable and feels great to carry. The completely dehorned (Carry Melt) treatment makes the gun feel much smaller than it looks. I carry this in a Crossbreed Supertuck Shorty and the combination makes it so comfortable to wear I don’t ever want to take it out.
I also took some footage of me shooting the gun in Slow Fire at targets 15 yards away, Rapid fire with reload from 5 yards away and out to 200 yards at a steel man-sized target. All of these done standing off-hand (unsupported). You’ll see that the gun is plenty accurate for one this small with a 3” barrel.
We had an interesting discussion in a local club forum about which 380ACP ammo to carry in a small gun like the Ruger LCP and that led me to conduct a very simple investigation using the wonders of YouTube.
Most of the hollow point 380s do well if you shoot it through water jugs or ballistic gel, but once you put 4 layers of denim in front of it, almost every one of them don’t expand. I think shooting through 4 layers of Denim is a good gauge of how the bullet will perform in a realistic self defense scenario as you would most likely be shooting through some clothing.
Here’s a video of the Corbon DPX shot into water jugs (yes, I know this is hardly scientific) but it’s the only thing we have to compare performance.
– Awesome expansion.
and the same bullet, through 4 layers of denim.
Remington Golden Sabre : – Also bad through denim.
Speer Gold Dot : – No expansion
Winchester Ranger-T : – My Fav, but no expansion
PMC Starfire : – no expansion
Buffalo Bore : – awesome expansion!
Hornady Critical Defense :
The Buffalo Bore .380ACP is “+P”. I don’t feel confortable carrying +P in the LCP as it’s not recommended. Not because of recoil, but because of structural integrity.
Hornady’s claim of reliable expansion is pretty much spot on, it expands consistently through everything (you can watch the videos on youtube yourself). Although the expansion is not as large as the other brands, it is consistent.
that’s why I carry Critical Defense, that and practicing proper shot placement.
** and NO I’m not sponsored by Hornady, perhaps I should be Thanks to NCFLYFISHER for making those videos.
Went over to DJ’s Loan in Bothell with Dave to look at their really impressive gun selection and found ONE last box of my fav .380 ammo for my Ruger LCP, the Hornady Critical Defense line.. This must be the hardest .380 ACP ammo to find. I’ve looked high and low both in physical retail outlets and online. Nada.
I do like the idea that it expands consistently no matter what you shoot it through.
here are specs of that ammo :
Don’t know how it performs in my gun, will try to shoot it through a chrono when I get my replacement.
Looks like I might have to put in a pre-order and wait 6 months to see if they’ll fulfill. anyone know where I can find some?
