Here’s a deep dive / review / look into the USPSA Open Division race gun that I’ve been shooting for a year now. It’s built a decade ago by a local GM. I bought it used from a fellow shooter here in the PNW. Here’s the breakdown :
DAA Foldable Jet Wings
KIDD Blast Shield
38 Super Comp Ultimatch bull barrel
SV (Old STyle) Compensator
EGW Extractor, ejector & lockwork
SV Frame with stippled polymer grip
Infinity TriGlide widebody trigger bow
Infinity long flat trigger insert
Infinity round commander hammer
SPS magazine 170mm (w Grams guts & 4mm bolens) 29rnds
SV Magazine 170mm (w Grams guts & 3mm bolens) 29rnds
STI 140mm (w Grams guts & 7mm bolens) 22rnds
Just got this installed on my SV Open Gun. It’s much better than the older aluminum magwell that came with it. It’s a little bigger and serves as a “stand” for my grip. It helps keep my grip on the gun tight, plus it looks much better too don’t you think so?
Gaping hole where you shove your mag in hard
After seeing Victor’s blazingly fast reloads at the recent match, I decided to pop some cash onto a more serious Magwell for my Kimber. I’ve been using the excellent Smith & Alexander Magwell for a year now and it has worked well for me, but this one is MUCHO bigger.
the TechWell SP Magwell System comes with matching grips that are fitted to hold the Techwell in place.
The grips are made by Alumagrips which provides a mean surface to hold on to. It works really well, actually better than my VZGrips Aliens.
Here’s how my Kimber IDPA/Single Stack gun looks like now. Fanschy huh?
After consulting with the venerable Rick Breneman, he suggested that I replace my full length guide rod for a G.I. Guide rod. I ordered the pair of Ed Brown Heavy Duty Recoil Spring Guide & Stainless Recoil Spring Plug.
Got it installed (was more tricky than my full length guide rod) and weighed it to see if I’ve shaved off some weight.
the Spring Plug looks good.
The new guide rod doesn’t hold the spring straight, I’m guessing it’s wobbling a little inside of the dust cover, I can hear the spring scratching the sides, making it sound “springier” than if you were using a full guide rod. I’ve read on many forums that this will not affect the performance of your gun at all.
that’s 2lbs, 8.2 ounces = 40.2 ounces! Just shy of the 41ounces weight limit for the CDP division.
finally! I get to keep my Magwell.
After playing around with ideas to reduce weight of my IDPA CDP Pistol (Permalink to I’m Overweight for IDPA) I remembered that the Kimber originally came with a very lightweight plastic Mainspring Housing. I went ahead and removed my very cool Ed Brown MSH & Magwell combo, which weighs 2.3 – 2.4 ounces btw
and replaced it with my original MSH. here’s the total weight :
2lbs 7.1 ounces = 39.1 ounces. YES!!
So If I wanna shoot CDP, I’d have to forego my magwell. loading is a little slower but I think with practice I can be as fast.
what would you do?
Just got back from San Francisco for a business trip and found these two on my doorstep today. I bought the VZ Gator Back 2 Bottom Grips Black Canvas from John VanZyck of VZ Grips :
and ordered a used Ed Brown Maxi-Welll & Flat Mainspring Housing (MSH) combo from a forum member. Great condition, looks something like this :
Installation is surprisingly simple. here’s a video of me installing both of them :
here’s the result, pretty isn’t it? 🙂
I’ve never had a good experience with installing magwells onto my two pistols. Either it’s out of alignment, or the magwell opening is just too small. recall I had a problem with my XDm magazine release because it’s sitting too tightly pressed against the opening of the magwell.
When I installed the Wilson Combat Magwell on my Kimber just recently, I realized that it’ll only allow the stock basepad-less magazines to fit properly. If you use one of those magazines like the really good Chip McCormick ones with the plastic basepad, it won’t seat the magazine in properly :
you can see from this thin black line where the plastic meets the magwell :
Time to take my file and dremel and get it shaved down. so after about two hours and with my crappy dremeling skills, I’ve shaved off some steel and polished it with some sand paper and metal polisher :
I really need to work on my filing skills.. BUT it works! checkout the fit now :
